Folie Deisgn
The Beginnings:
The Group met on several occasions to discuss the initial ideas for the site. We all agreed that only a very limited amount of details can be discussed about the future developments without constructing a site analysis...
Each of us then split up and reasearch the preposed area:
Research:
With my research I went about studying the major land marks around the area and there importance/ relevence in Brisbane cities developement.
THE STORY BRIDGE:
According to advance-merc.com, The Story Bridge is renowned as one of Australias most celebrated engineering accomplishments. The Story Bridge is still regarded the largest metal spanned truss bridge in Australia.
While these points are all relevent the importance and significance of this bridge is Actually due to its construction an materials. They are almost completely Australian made and handled. A total of 95% of the materials, labour costs and construction was Australian owned. The Story Bridge roots itself into brisbanes heritage as 'the bridge made by Australians, for Australians'.

THE FLOODS:
Like most The floods have been something that has effected Brisbane patrons, 'wether physical or mentally we all have something to say about the floods'... I found this notion that I had dreamnt up an internteresting idea, and decide to revisit it with the rest of the group for concept development and ideas.
As the picture shows Howard Smith Wharf was complete ingulfed in the floods, the beloved fitness area has now since been revisited as a preposed redevelopment area.

THE NEXT MEETING:
The next time we met the group all introduced there planned reseach and then set out on our site visit journey. the following is a few of the photos taken on the site vist..
As you can see the site did pose alot of challenges in acquiring acceptable photos but with the few we did get we learnt quite alot. After the site visit we became increasingly aware of the surrounding materials and how they held a pure beauty that showed the growth of the site through time. We also realised from the site that besides it being a developemnt site at the moment it has alot of access and surrounding heritage influences.
CONCEPTS:
The group later conversed and rounded up several conceptual ideas.
One:
This idea came form the recent flood situation. The idea was to show a form that almost looked as though it was swallowing itself over and over as the floods have in the past. Aswell as this this form also took materials and used them to its advantage using them as a visual representation of were the flood hight actually crept up to on the folie.
Two:
This concept was also born from the above reseach as the first was. Understanding the historical presence in the area the group then decided to play with the idea of framing the history in a memorial flood walk through folie. So this concept combined the first concept and now a new concept to show that through the flood brisbane still stands.
Three:
With this concept it began the beginning of our final development it was the concept of growth. Obviously through time the site has gown through a serious of different developments and still a little piece of each era has made it through and stayed on the site as a piece of history. This was turning into i visual representation of growth with a tree of life style folie were the branches were made for inhabiting. The group decided that the concept was strong, but it needed to be abstract far more. we started creating symbols of growth such as the pictures from my journal below.
From this image our final project development was set into motion. We created a chandeler type form which we suspended on site which funnels sounds from various populated sites giving SITE AWARNESS and GROWTH.
The following images shows the various changes the final design went through to get to its finished product.
Concept: To express 'Site Awareness' and general surroundings throught sound and visual stimulous.
Context: The Folie design was position underneath the storybridges arc overs. This is for several contextual reasons, them being; Genral cover from the elements, The Darker undertones of the site will instantiate the glow of the speakermirror tubes.
Experience: Upon viewing the Folie the low frequence noises will travel to populations ears drawing them in, the mirror textures of the Floating chanderliers echo the site around you (Site Awareness). When closer to the Folie one will start to hear different drowns and noises as they reach up there ear to each speaker a clear noise of some were surrounding them is heard, hinting of a moment somewere around you.

Project 2
Concept developement...
For project to i started by looking at my original follie design concept which was 'Site Awarness', A simple play on words led me to the new idea of 'Sight Preception'.... this idea of sight perception led me to think of a horror library...
Horror Library Development.
This little concept drawing is what my think behind the library of horror was to be about... i looked at the floods in the area of howard smith wharf and the WW2 bunkers to start some form work ideas.
Above show the simple ideas of the five bunkers that run along the cliff face coming together to show a stacked bunker biulding. each bunker was to have a different volume to the room so as you journey through the building you would feel as if your perception of the space was being ultered.
After a simple progression into this concept the library started to become very literal and started to turn into a novelty... so i decided to go back to the drawing board and revaluate my concept and refine it further.
Refining the Concept.
The Original idea of the library of lost objects was that it was a space were people could go to find items around brisbane that were lost to it....
this original idea was compelling and i really liked it but after thinking about it for days i couldn't distinguish it as a library there was no borrowing factor invovled in it.
The concept as it stands now is that the library is a space were people can go to search for objects they are missing or need. they are then welcome to borrow out the objects just as if it were a book and use it. As well as the object they borrow they also recieve a little journal with each object were they are able to write down what they used the object for. When they return the object there will be a contiuned relationship between the object the library and its user.
I liekd the idea of putting the library on the water. my idea was to slab out on to the waters surface so that it seems as though the library is isolated or 'lost'
I felt it was now time to start a small form development.. this development was never ment to be a final development just another tool or diagram to help me progress my concept.
After presenting and going over the comcept with my tutor there were a few things that we both agreed needed working on. i am just going to take the time to list these bellow in dot point form.
- I have taken the building off the land then reslabed it on the water? (Is that necesary)
- My way of displaying the objects (Shelving) is to simple and boring.
- i need a more refined depository system
- No clear journey through the building
These things all needed to be address in the next project!
Project 3
I started this project with the mind set that to ensure a more refined deisign i needed to redevelop the project from project 2 but keep some of the underlining ideas that the building adopts.
The above image shows some of the workings that have spawned the new design for Project three. I came across a quote on the net as i was looking for inspiration from Herclitus - "One can not stand in the same river twice", This inspired me to use water as a aesthetic and literal dersign aspect. I wonted to hide the building in a waterfall to imitate the concept of lost. while also using water as a tactile aspect of the buildings design. (See the pictures bellow for waterfall representation)
These two images show the simplistic concrete block cladding, then the waterfall that is pumped from the water directly over the building.
After speaking with the tutor there were a couple of things that needed adjusting.
- Safer journey through the building, a open staircase near a waterfall is dangerous.
- How many People are using this library? are all those rooms necesary?
bellow is the working for the second development stage of Project 3.
The above image shows my working to try and develope an interesting way of displaying and recieving your lost object. I deceided on using the second image on the bottom. The section shows three layers. A glass layer with wholes in it to reach your hand through. A stream of water. And then tha glass pit filled with object capsules.
I like this method because it is involving, Tactile and resposive.
Above is some simple orthagonal projections and sections. You will note that the building only has two rooms. The first is a room were by one collects there items and the second is a room were one can bring there item to reflect in the space and open there capsule.
Project Three Final Development
This is my final development of the library of lost objects
The library was based off the concept of LOST and took inspiration from two famous philosophical quotes;
" One man's junk is another man's Treasure", - George S, Kaufman
The Above picture is a diagram that explains the second quote that used as inspiration "One can not stand in the same river twice", i found that this quote fits with the concept of lost while still had potential to create an exprience through the use of water. Water is used in the library as a tactile stimulous as well as a aesthetic methpor when it engulfs the whole building making it seems as thought its lost to the water.
The library is situated out in the middle of the river, this was done because the library is a private library. Only ment to be experience by a few people at once. So my idea was to making the building isolated and along (LOST out on the river)
Out on the river is also the perfect location purel due to its visual appearance and noteablity around the site.
Ground level perspective.. An interesting feature about the library is the use of the waterfall that runs down the building. it spreads out over the slab that its on making it seem as though you are walking on water. I felt this fits with the concept of LOST really well. The emotion you feel when you have lost something is almost sireal and unbelieveable (liek walking on water)
The above image show the plan at section level to corrolate with the perspective image above. as you can see there are two access points into the building off the main wharf. a lift for wheel chair acess (This space is inclose with a watefall) and the escolator which will effortlessly take you to your first destination.
This is the first are in which the escolators while bring you. You are faced with this tall open room and inside is a glass wall. Through the glass wall is a see through pit and inside the pit is hundreds upon hundres of capsule of objects that have been collected over the years. One only needs to past through the water and slip there hand through the opening in the glass river wall to collect a capsule.
This plan is taken from the elevated section. It acurately shows the important spaces in the first collection space room.
The above perspective is of the second room, the contemplation room. Similiar to the first room the second is a tall stunning room with a glasss wall that shows the piles of capsules thats been collected over the years. I have added a large stair case like seating arrangement infront of the glass river wall to suggested people to rest and open there capsule. and reflect on the site infront of them.
The above plan has been taken at section level. this level shows the spaces around the second room (The contemplation space) as well as surrounding areas. This level also includes a balcony space on the escolator path some occupaints can take a break from the journey through the building. i also wanted to take advantge of the views that are seen on that side of the building.
This is the top floor here is were the new object is placed into the old capsule and thrown out down the pit for the next person to collect years down the track.
This is the top floor it shows the pit and the fixed binocluors that run around the sides of the building, they are there for a couple of reasons; taking advantage of the views and secondly it fits with the concept of lost and found (Looking)
